Xiamen is a comfortable place to let the coast set the pace. Sea air, old port streets and Fujian flavours make the city feel welcoming without demanding a packed schedule. The nearby island of Gulangyu is best explored slowly, with time for gardens, music history and small lanes between the main viewpoints.
Give Gulangyu a full morning
Ferries and visitor controls can affect the order of the day, so check the current arrangements before departure. Once on the island, walk beyond the busiest route and leave time for a quiet garden, museum or café. Comfortable shoes matter more than a long list of stops.
Add a rural contrast
A day trip into tulou country brings a different Fujian landscape: tea hills, villages and large communal buildings. It is a longer road day, so add it only when the group wants architecture and countryside more than another city attraction.
